Merry Christmas to me!

As an early Christmas to myself, I went out and bought a new road bike -- A Trek 2100 from Blues (the wife finally gave me the green light). Got a pretty good deal as it was a 2006 model and was discounted. 9-speed, triple chain ring, 105 shifters, Ultegra RD, carbon seat-stays. It will replace my old tank of a bike, the Schwinn Traveler, on group rides next spring/summer. I can't believe how much lighter it is -- guess bike technology has come a long way in 20 years.

I'm well aware that I'll still be slow as molasses as the "engine" is still the same, but it is nice having the STI shifting and it feels more responsive in the couple times I've had it out.

Man, you've got your new bike, Adrian has the new sound system -- all I've gotten in the last two weeks is a head cold.

You looked pretty smooth last week on the Trek - I think you'll really feel a difference in confidence when in close quarters in a pace line with the STI shifters you have now.

You mean for that 3 minutes before I'm dropped? Yes, that will be sweet. :)

BTW -- mind if I hold onto your Fitzik saddle a while longer? I haven't been able to try it yet. If it's comfortable, I may take take the plunge on an Aliante. What's the difference between the one you gave me to try and the one on your Lightspeed?

Sure - hold onto it until you have a chance to take a couple of good rides on it. Not a lot of difference between that saddle and the Aliante Gamma I have on the bike now - the main difference is that the saddle I have uses the wing flex technology and has a kevlar shell. The one I loaned you was original equipment on the bike (it's called the Aliante Sport) and is made of plastic. The Aliante Sport is no longer in production - if you like the one I loaned you you'll probably want to get the Gamma.

Congratulations Kevin!!! Man that's exciting! First day I rode my brand new trek to work i wrecked...misty and foggy...woman on cell phone decided she would slam on it and cut me off at the intersection...hit the brakes and the bike came under me - hit the pavement and slid a good 15 feet. Ah memories!

At least you got the first "ding" out of the way early, Adrian. lol

I've only had it out once. That's the bad thing about buying a road bike this time of year -- waiting for warmer weather!

My Cross Check loves this weather, though ;)

The first day I got my bike, I drove to the shop, put the bike on my carrier, put a bungee cord on the front wheel so it wouldn't bang around, and drove home. When I got home, put on my cycling shoes, took the bike off of the carrier, clipped in, pushed off, and immediately fell over. I was so excited to ride the bike that I forgot to take the bungee cord off the front wheel!

Bob -- no offense, but I would have laughed my ass off seeing that.
